Looking for advice from mud flap users

Greetings,

I am looking for advice from mud flap users.
Who has mud flaps on their van?
Could you post some pics?
What is a good length?
How wide depends on the tire, but will the flaps rub on the front tires when turning?
Does the thickness matter for longivity?
Rubber vs plastic pros/cons?
What brands are better than others?

Thanks,

Zugg

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

i have them on the rear only. to pass the state inspection, it's required if your tires are of a certain size. i never knew that until they failed me for not having them. i just got the cheapest thing i could find but eventually i'll get good ones. i know this is useless information, but in Utah you need them if you have 285+ tires....at least that's what i was told.

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

I have mudflaps front and rear. The largest that the auto parts store carries, and they are too short to be of much use. I need ones that are 24-30" long.

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

Oldfart3 has a nice mudflap system, basically right under where the mudflap attaches it's cut off (a few inches) and then another (or the same) flap is attached with those plastic clips. Throw an extra couple dozen clips in the van and then if you rip one off while offroad, it only damages the cheap clips and you can put it right back on.

The mudflaps on my van are standard SMB, and in my opinion too small. Haven't gotten around to doing anything about it though.

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

I went to Kragen and bought 2 sets of their largest flaps. They fit perfectly and attach nicely in a spot that affords good protection front and rear. I run 285s and they cover the tread area. They just screw on. I wasn't too sure they were well mounted but they show no signs of coming loose after 100+miles of off road and 3000 miles of highway. No more mud slathered up the sides from the front tires.

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

Greetings,

skrivan, Thanks, you might benefit putting a pair up front!

Mike, Thanks for the reply. I will need 30" or longer with 18" rims.

jage, Thanks, I will look at oldfart3's setup.

Christopher Thwaites, I may be checking on Kragen as well.
I wanted some feedback on brands and only you & jage mention this.

Anyone got "Back Off" mud flaps with the orange bearded character?

p.s. Do the front mud flaps rub on the tires when turning?

Thanks all for your advice.

Peace,

Zugg

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

When I was at SMBW I met a guy from Santa Rosa and we discussed flaps that slide into a tube and lock in place like those pop up shelter legs. I have access to heavy duty rubber that is fairly pliable and would like to look into easy removable mud flaps. Myself I don't like the look of them but they have a place in the travel world. He said they were especially needed for a trip to Alaska which started the conversation in the first place.

Question:
Ca law says if the tires are outside the fender flair by 1 inch, mud flaps are required. Is this the same law this thread is talking about which other states enforce?

Besides, who wouldn't love to have chrome ladies glimmering in the sunlight on your mud flaps

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

My front mudflaps rub at full turn. But, nothing is wearing, it is only a mild noise, not a problem.

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

I just put mud flaps/ splash guards on my SMB. I got some CRE splash guards 24'' by 12'' from realtruck.com. They have a good selection of large guards at good prices.

Just sitting they do not rub. If turned to the worst angle the just clear. The front will rub when turning in reverse. No damage, I can just see the dirt has been removed. My tires are 285 75. I got the thick plastic as it will hold up longer.

Splash guards are required in some states if the vehicle has been lifted/ larger tires. If the wheel well is not covering the tire, they do not want the tire throwing objects, dirt, mud, and water at vehicles behind you.
