How ironic that he was picking up trash on the beach. I think he left more than he picked up.

I agree. Makes no sense to me either. The sand gets everywhere on the underside of the rig and the salt eats the metal. There is no way to clean it all out.

In the early days in Oregon the beach was the only link between towns up and down the coats. People would drive wagons, ride horses, and later motor vehicles at low tide between towns. Highway 101 was no where to be seen. That is why there is no private beaches on the coast. Historically it was a public road.

The guy actually fell asleep in the van and got caught by the tide. I believe he was surrounded by a couple of feet of water by the time he awoke. Obvious his efforts to get out were fruitless. Not sure if that had anything to do with weed being legal in Oregon.

He lived out of the van and pretty much lost all his belongings in the event, now is homeless in Astoria. I am sure he will make his way to Portland by this weekend.

I've driven on the beach at Ocean Shores, WA. To be honest I did it mostly for the novelty -- I had a convertible at the time, sun, surf, sea breeze... Agreed about the salt, though. I never drove in the surf and my first stop was always a carwash.

Another time I did it because we were having a beach bonfire and it was convenient to just load all the wood in the back of the Mercedes wagon and drive it out there.

Got the convertible stuck once, due to a knucklehead move -- I was driving in too high a gear, so when I hit a soft spot I didn't have the torque to power through it. I just got out my tow strap and waited for someone in a 4x4 that wanted to show off. Took about 10 minutes.

Never got the wagon stuck, in spite of a Mercedes W123 being not exactly a dune buggy. The sand there packs up like concrete when it gets wet. It's mostly about keeping your brain fully engaged, keeping momentum up, and not going so fast that you can't plan your line around dry-looking spots.

This sad tale almost reminds me of the Boyd Coddington motorhome debacle at the 2007 Bonneville Speedweek
