Re: portable solution for lifting penthouse?

search for "portable electric penthouse lift" . There are a few threads about one that Sportsmobile makes.

Does anyone know if the electric PH can be added to your van. Mine is an 06 and was going to add solar and at same time think about an electric PH as it will get harder to open.

You can adjust the springs on the manual lift pop top to accomidate heavier loads.

If the solar panels aren't that heavy, the springs can be adjusted and it should be fine. However, ours are an older style and probably weigh around 75 lbs. total; adjusting the springs helped but it still took a lot of force to get the top up. The problem is that the more stuff you put up there, the harder it is to adjust the springs to compensate. Yes, you can retrofit an electric top (we did) but expect it to cost in the $4,000 range. It takes a week and they need to completely remove the penthouse to install the motors. We felt it was worth it.

Re: portable solution for lifting penthouse?

I had a Full Length roof rack built to hold 2 full size solar panels & a rear basket. I thought that the weight wasn't all that heavy until I had the thing mounted. I had a heck of a time getting the penthouse up. I adjusted the springs & that helped very little in my case. I have since built a hand crank set up out of a camper jack. It works quite well & is a back saver to boot! Sure it is another thing to haul around but it does the trick.
