Scout Trip

looking to take a group of 9 Boy scouts to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and would like to camp for 5 nights on the Forest Service side in dispersed camping and not in the park. looking to do some day hikes and sight see and some in camp scout stuff. I would appreciate some location and direction suggestions for this area. thanks

Re: Scout Trip

My only suggestion would be Toroweap or in that area. The North Rim is still closed for the season, but the road should be plowed no later than the 15th.

There is plenty of dispersed camping before you enter the park at Toroweap. But I don't know about snow or mud in that area.

Re: Scout Trip

usmc2,

Where are you coming from? If you're going through Vegas on your way to the Grand Canyon, save some time to stop off at the Las Vegas Area Council office. It's one of the better BSA offices in the U.S.. And if your boys are into geocaching, I have a geocache hidden at the council office called On My Honor. I also have a bunch of caches just off I-15 heading north out of Las Vegas all the way to Zion NP. Finding them would break up your trip a little.

I agree with Mike that Toroweep would be a great place to take your boys. The roads should be dry as we have had very little rain and no snow this year. The North Rim would be a little cooler and have trees for camping, but Toroweep would be prettier and more isolated. Here's some pictures from when Mike and I were at Toroweep:

Have a great time with your Boy Scouts. And thanks for your service in turning young boys into strong men of character.

Mac

Re: Scout Trip

We're looking to go June 11th-16th and we live by Capital Reef National Park. I would like to head towards the North Rim Entrance so we could have some trees and I believe it would be slightly closer for us.

Re: Scout Trip

In that case, a little before the Park entrance is FR22 and DeMotte Campground on your right. Across the road is FR610/11. If you follow 611 about 6 miles back you will be on the rim of a side canyon with a few nice campsites.

You can stop at DeMotte campground and talk to the host about that and other camping opportunities in the area, and there are many places in the National Forest.
