Second Hand Vehicle US Licensing

Help Help Help Help.

SMB West cannot license my used vehicle/van.

What do i need to do in California to license my smb?

Are there nearby states that are easier & cheaper, costs, taxes, etc?

Do you have vehicle licensing centres or inspection stations?

Vehicle will have comprehensive insurance & AAA membership.

Cheers, Doug

What happened to the pink slip (title) and former registration?

AAA should be able to handle that for you, otherwise you'll have to visit the DMV.

You'll have much less hassle and not have to pay any taxes if you register in Oregon. You will however need an address with at least one utility going to it, to prove residency (California actually made Oregon registration tougher, because they were losing so much tax revenue). Some RV parks will let you pay for your own electrical service, so you can receive a utility bill.

Yep bring your stuff in to the nearest aaa branch they handle ca vehicle registration and are far more easy to deal with than the dmv. Likely will need it smogged certification first as well but they can advise.

Re: Second Hand Vehicle US Licensing

You need to start with the vehicle title. (it is the proof of ownership)

That title needs to be transferred into your name.
This can typically be done at a DMV. You'll probably need to be there in person.
Most states require the prior owner to sign the title to release any interest in it.

One you have that in your name, you can register the vehicle.
You may need proof of residency (i.e. a driver's license in the same state).

Some states have emission, state patrol or roadworthiness inspections. I'm not sure about CA.

Which state are you going to register it in? I would avoid CA. They have tougher emission requirements.

Another alternative is a trip permit (or series of trip permits). You'll be able to legally drive it around for a short period.

When I imported a car from Norway I had all the paperwork done in a morning and titled and registered, and I started without a US title. You just have to know the right steps.

Doug:

What state was the van purchased in?

Was it from a dealer or private party?

What state are you intending to register it in?

CA does not have any inspection if the van has a CA title already.

When I brought my van into CA from Wyoming to register, I had to go to a DMV (the dept of motor vehicles) to get it inspected before I could register it. They basically checked the VIN against the title and confirmed that the emissions sticker under the hood was CA compliant.

All in-state vehicles that I have purchased in CA could be easily registered at AAA and typically do not require any inspections.

Doug, since your van is a diesel, it's unclear to me if you would need a smog (smoke) test before registering. You would need a valid CA address I believe.

If you have any choice of registering in another state, I would do that. The other thing that has not been mentioned yet is that you typically pay the sales tax on a used vehicle when registering it unless you bought it from a dealer that charged the appropriate sales tax when you bought it.

Unless you're in a state without sales tax, like Oregon.
