Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

I was not paying attention and went to back into space already occupied , the sad thing was it was this young mans third day of ownership and I destroyed his right rear fender , trunk , and peeled his bumper . I really felt bad for him ! His paint color was Jet Black and didn't even leave a mark on my Aluminess .

Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

I have totaled a conversion van.
Or should I say someone totaled my conversion van.
Lucky to be alive, my girlfriend and I.

Before

After
I am smiling because I/we are alive.

It is a long story of injury, hospital time and dreaded work with profit oriented insurance companies.
I have gained experience in conversion van construction and insurance companies defiance.

Man that don't look good. Hopefully no on-going health problems. So it was a fight to get your insurance to pony up for the loss?

Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

Yes, wasn't good, Dave.

I'll give a run down of my experience.
First of all, I have always considered insurance a gamble.
Gambling with your health, gambling with your odds of being in an accident (What? Can't happen to me).

So, I was underinsured. The person who T-boned me was insured, but under-insured for this type of accident.
Medical coverage is a separate area compared to vehicle insurance. Medical bills can be bartered down and you may only need to pay 50% of your initial cost/debt.
An attorney can do this, or if you are on top of your paper trail you can do it and save lawyers costs.
The insurance company is out to make/save money, not to pay you the fullest/largest amount.
Insurance companies are scoundrels. I could type pages of this.
Whole 'nuther story ...Medical.

My GMC van was not insured properly, ie, I took the risk, saved money on premiums (less coverage), and got less on my totaled van.
I did not provide an itemized document of my van conversion to my insurance company (writer for the conversion).
Roughly $12,000 worth.
I was paid a depreciated price for my van. Thats just how it is, at least for me in the situation I was in (with the coverage I had).
A motorcycle was in the back. It was totaled also. For some reason I got FULL value of a new motorcycle on it.
I got full value of a totaled bicycle in the van also.

I had roughly $46K + in the van at the time of the accident...

So, $24K van
$12K interior
$8.7K for the totaled Aprilia m/c
$1K for a Specialized bicycle
______
= $45K apprx into the van

This does not include wheels/tires, sound system/moniter, fridge and other small items.

$40,600. was paid out for the whole package.

*EDIT: State Farm, the insurance company of the people who hit us paid out this amount, as they were ticketed and the responsible party.
I had to barter a bit and not sign off until an agreement was made.

You can expect depreciation. But, there is enhanced coverage available, I understand, to cover purchasing another new vehicle to replace your new vehicle.
So... I did not get the full value of what I paid for the conversion, but I received a substantial sum none the less.

Funny thing is, Farmers, my Ins. co. at the time, said I should of provided an itemized document of money spent for the conversion.
But on my new van, Farmers says they will only cover for 4K on extras put into it.
So they gave me a bs line where they would only have paid a small portion anyway.

OK, on to my new Insurance company.

AAA insurance. Yes Triple A who do maps, towing, etc.
The insurance company they use is American Commerce insurance.

AAA saved me roughly 50% across the board in insurance for multi-vehicle, home, etc.
No kidding. Check them out. And of course things vary state to state.
Might not save much on one vehicle, but maybe a boat load on all your insurance.
I saved $2500 a year in premiums.

They also cover for extras put into my vehicle. Not specifying a limit to us.
So my van is covered, my 4x4 (and associated accessories), and costs for interior.
We are adding itemized writers as we go on the build-up with AAA.
They are covering it!
My E350 is a budget-build compared to some.

American Commerce Ins seems to have been around since 1960.
And AAA is a good company.

I hope this helps on my personal experience with insurance.
I have learned a boat load since my 2008 accident!!!
As in no more minimum insurance coverages!

The era of my accident is truly in the fog as my bell was rung pretty well...

Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

One thing to add, from my own experience being T-boned on a motorcycle, if you employ a lawyer in any capacity allow them to do all the communication with the insurance company from then on. Being disinclined to sue I made the mistake of calling the insurance company directly when the firm my lawyer was consulting started talking about suing my insurance on top of the driver that hit me.

Having a lawyer (not an ambulance chaser) was not a bad thing, but having no experience with that sort of thing left me at a small disadvantage. I'm just glad they changed the health care laws about pre-existing conditions so I can have additional work done on my leg without being out of coverage. The double casts look brutal, we can get together and swap broken leg stories sometime!

Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

One other thing to consider.
You can't get blood out of a rock...
Depending on how well you can assert yourself to insurance companies (it can be done), it may not be worthwhile to have a lawyer.

If the max you can get is 100K or say 250K out of insurance of the guilty party, and the guilty has no more assets, your lawyers fees will come out of that.
Effectively knocked down your due by roughly 33%.
Lawyers get their money before you get yours.
Oh, the lawyer will know if the guilty party has the money (or not) to sue.
If the lawyer does not see available money, usually they will not take the case.

Bartering & dickering, not unlike buying a used car works on medicals costs.
In network, out of network, approved, not approved, what doctor you use, are all games you will have to play with insurance.
Your insurance does have to show good intention.
What they get away with is up to you. Or your attorney.
If you give up on your insurance, they win! They are banking on it.

Does anyone have a policy that talks about taking it on dirt roads/off road?

What is the prerequisite to fall under the primary residence loophole? Is there a time limit? I was contemplating selling my home as i have not used it in several years. But i also do not want to lie about a false address. Since my wife died i have been spending 7 to 18 month a year traveling and camping in my rig. I have already learned the hard way :e8: not to open such a can of worms as this with my current carrier, so i may need to start asking around some other providers before i drop it on mine.

Re: Seeking RV Insurance for 4WD New SMB

Any carriers that will cover a SMB 4WD as a primary residence (with good stated value coverage)?

If working with an attorney on an injury case, you can usually:
1) Wait to pay the medical bills until the case gets settled.
2) Reduce the medical bills by the % of the attorney's fees. The reasoning is that the attorney's work was needed to get the doctor paid. A CA attorney stated that this is standard practice.
