My prejudice may come partly from having had a 1975 Westfalia with a sliding door that was always coming off the track. I don't think I've ever had a van with a sliding door that actually worked smoothly.
All of the door switches on my van are disconnected. If I want a light on I have to turn it on. I don't know if it came that way or if someone else wanted more discreet bathroom visits.
BTW, I have the high/low lights with "festoon" bulbs. I replaced the "low" bulbs with red LEDs. Just enough light to maneuver around without waking everyone or killing your night vision.
