The Code 3 SMB Fleet

I was just at SMB West the other day and shot a few photos of the SMBs that are headed off to do duty outside the US. It was pretty amazing to see all of them together. They really did a great job engineering the three different styles of the vehicles. I would love to have one of these as my duty vehicle.

I'd love the have the checkbook that paid for those! I was lucky enough to see some of them in person last time I was up there. Alan was a proud father showing them off.

Well, for the sake of simplicity, figure a minimum of $100K x 13 (how many I counted in the photo) and it's a chunk of change.

Looking at those pics again, I like the lower height profile of those side windows that SMBw added. Mine are large which make for a nice outward view, but don't flow well with the lines of the side body in my opinion.

The smaller windows should also help keep the solar load down by minimizing the glass.

The vehicles are the cheap part of the deal. The dog haulers carry 6 SAR dogs each. Each one of those dogs is a $250,000 investment. Then there is the Boeing Cargo plane that hauls all the vehicles, dogs, staff, and equipment around.

Yeah Id like to have that checkbook!

I don't remember the exact figures but there were 17 total vehicles. There were three different "styles." One was a personell carier, with fold up bench style seats. The second style was a gear hauler with metal shelving/bins lining the walls of the van. The third style was a K-9 hauler with 6 or 8 dog kennels inside the van. I think they all have a heavy duty AC system and some or all have up to 100 gallons of water on board.

Yeah, I think it comes out to 12 barrels of oil per vehicle.

Very cool vans, but you're right, the cost of the vans is a pittance for the govt. of Qatar. Even at $5mm, that is pocket change.
