Tow Hook Source
The Ford frame has elongated holes on the outboard sides for towhooks. These were used by the towing company to pull the SMB up onto a tiltback truck, and secured for towing. The hooks were fishook shaped and different than chain-end hooks. I am seeking a source for these to add to my recovery kit. Does anyone know where they may be purchased?

I bought all my tie-down equipment (for securing the Bronco to my trailer) from these guys. They were recommended to me, and I found them to have great customer service.

For my Bronco, I use axle straps on my front axle, the 15" J-hooks around my rear axle tube, and the Mini J-hooks in the oval shaped holes around mid frame to minimize body roll. It may be the Mini J-hooks that you are looking for. Or you could likely use the Mini T-hook as well. You could also look in the phone book under Rigging Equipment and see if you have someone local.

Just don't recover with anything that could turn into a bullet. Never use a strap with a hook, never use chain, and never tie two straps together with a D-ring. People die from doing all of these things.

For recovery, a bracket like this works well, up to working load limit of your hitch, that is.

I don't know what exactly is available for the van but you want your attachment point attached to the frame. The Ford pickups have a eye and most Jeepers have 10K tow hooks (although I think those are a little light for the vans). I've seen mega hooks on school busses and other heavy trucks, or D-rings like Bronco_hauler posted should work in a hitch- and I know they have front mount hitches for the vans.
Getting the hooks isn't that hard, figuring out where to attach them sometimes is. I don't know what the stock van frame is like so I can't say what would be a good idea.

I had a custom front-hitch installed for recovery purposes.

Geoff,
I have found your web site and the associated pictures quite helpful.
Thanks for putting in the effort.
