Underfloor storage-aftermarket

Does anyone know of a source for an underfloor storage box? I like the SMB version but it's way out of my price range. I can't locate anything on the net.

Thanks

Tom

And you probably won't. This is a custom made item for these specific vehicles. Yeah, it's spendy, but for the fabrication and installation, the price is correct.

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

I don't think I will spend $1000 on the box I will be buried in.

I've found some aluminum underbed boxes in the American Van catalog that look like they could be made to work. Still $400-500.

Just for reference, Tom, what did you spend on your van?

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

Tom, have you thought about having one made. Draw what you want and take the drawing to a local sheetmetal shop. I would think 3hrs labor at 60$ and about 120$ for materials if you have it made out 16 ga or 18 ga a sheetmetal shop can do it, and that is heavy enough to weld.

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

I thought the cost of the compartment was a minor part of the cost. It is the access from the top and closing that off that eats up the money.

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

Here is what I am looking at. Turned on its back and opening into the van, or perhaps mounted so that it can be lowered like the spare tire but with no opening to the interior. For storage of heavy, rarely used items like a jack, tow chain, tools, etc.

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

Tom - I think you'll find that you access this storage area more then you think you will now. It's really a handy spot. Neat idea on lowering it like the stock spare, but that will be a bit of a hassle if you get into it very often. If you bolt it up and access it from the inside, the American Van one cost seems a little high as you'll be tossing the hinge, lid, latch, etc. I'd sure check into getting it made up like fishbreath suggested.
I presume you've checked into the cost of just the box from SMB? It's made to fit and line-xed. Pretty nice unit, but if it's $1000, I agree, too much.
Good luck on the project and keep us informed.

I agree with Scatter.... we are constantly accessing our unde floor storage. We access it when we are driving and when the weather is bad or the temps cold, so only being able to access ir from the exterior would just not work for us.

Re: Underfloor storage-aftermarket

I have to agree with everyone and Jeffery is correct; unless you can find someone to fab something for a cheaper price, the under storage compartment is too valuable to pass by. But I also heard of a few owners that had problems with water and dust coming in with their SMB install. Mine has been fine. I canít imagine being w/o it.
