Where to camp?

I've been lurking on the site for a few months now. I actually found you guys after I bought my new to me Sportsmobile in November of last year. I can't tell how much I appreciate all the information I've found on your forum. For the last couple of months the van has been in and out of the shop for a new front end, front brakes, radiator, battery, a/c repair, tires, and wheels. Today she is at Southern Cali Custom Metal getting measured for a rear bumper with swing out tire mount. Owning a '96 Dodge Sportsmobile I find a little more challenging because most accessories are for Fords. With the information on this forum I was able to make my decisions on which tires, rims , shocks, and interior LED lighting. Next week she goes back to my mechanic to have an Eaton E Locker installed. We had to wait 3 or 4 weeks for them to send it out.

On March 22nd we have an appointment at Sportsmobile west for a penthouse bed install. We will be arriving the day before and was wondering if anyone could recommend a place to camp close by? I was thinking a half hour or hour out max.

After the penthouse install we are off to Yosemite and beyond!

A little info on our new Sportsmobile. We are the third owners of a 1996 Dodge 3500 Maxi 5.9 with overdrive. I don't know the interior lay out number. I've looked all over the forum and have not seen one like it. My favorite feature is it has a bed in the rear that folds up like a taco. You pull it open and the bed is ready with sheets, duvet, and pillows. Very comfortable. She has a three burner stove, large fridge with freezer, and 26 gallons of water.

Any help on where to stay in Fresno would be great. Thanks again for all the great info on this board!

Not the most scenic but does in a pinch

A little further away but nicer is the Kings river. Also there are several other camps at Pine Flat lake similar to Millerton that are closer to SMB.
Kings River
And about 90 min away if you're looking for something n/o Fresno
McConnell SRA

There are more around Yosemite like this place which at this time of year is great...just further off.
Merced River Canyon

Other spots around Bass Lake are worth a look off hwy-41

Miami Trails area has free camping deep in the trees with very few folks around.....near bass lake on the way to Yosemite. There are a small number of campsites there, some really nice.

Re: Where to camp?

Very true just be aware that it can get a little hecktic at times because it's an off Road ATV park. But during the week I never see much activity

Re: Where to camp?

I'm 20 minutes from SMB West. This time of year I would send you above Pine Flat Lake along the Kings River. Lots of Boondocking spots. Let me know if you want details.

Re: Where to camp?

If you do go to Pine Pine Flat, stop by the Schoolhouse restaurant for lunch or dinner

Re: Where to camp?

The Schoolhouse is a great place to eat at 180 and Frankwood, and barely out of the way. After eating you would go north through the golf course to the road to Tivy Valley and then to the Pine Flat Road. The best free camp spots are past the lake. When you get to the Bailey bridge you can go straight or left across the bridge and then right towards Garnet Dike. Either way there are spots along the river. If you need more let me know and I can give you a phone number.
