Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

It's pretty hard to find factory output charts for any of these Ford engines, but according to what I found at Banks' site the 6.8 peaks around 3200 but TQ doesn't significantly drop off till 4000...

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

Exactly. At about 14,000# , floored, towing a trailer, that 5.4 settles in at 2500RPM. On an 8% grade anyways.

The 6.8 makes peak torque around 4500?

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

I think it clearly illustrates the negative effect of pushing a motor beyond what it is designed to do. More speed was available but at 50% more boost and therefore more fuel. It also generated a lot...

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

I had a chance to do a little testing yesterday.

This is a 450/1550 Mercedes pulling 76,000# up a 6% grade:
Peak TQ @ 1050-1450 RPM
Peak HP @ 1900 RPM
Note the turbo boost to the right of the...

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

Also, when changing to a lower gear with the intent of going up a hill faster....one has to assume that momentum lost during the gear change will be recovered and that the lower gear ratio will be...

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

It's hard to tell with an automatic because the torque converter is capable of making its own gear ratio. A lower gear is also multiplying available TQ at a higher rate and on a 4 speed that...

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

I guess it depends on how one defines performance. To some its a sled pull, to others it's a drag race.

Torque and HP curves aren't linear and are at opposite ends of the RPM range. Just as TQ...

Re: Salvaging a Penthouse top

Thanks, that's really helpful. So was the front cut just behind the roof now that is in line with the "B" pillars?

Did you happen to note the thickness of the OSB block?

Re: How little engine power is just barely enough?

It's all about the torque which is in turn, multiplied by the gears and tire size. If you have the right gearing and enough gears you can do a whole lot with very little. If you have the patience,...

Re: '12 E250 RB 5.4L w/ SMB penthouse custom build

That turned out very nice. Is the rear bench a one-off ?

Re: In need of a few measurements

My plan once I've refurbished all the components:
Reassemble the top upside down, without springs, and measure the relationship between the frame and the top, then measure the van towards the rear...

Re: In need of a few measurements

That would be great. BTW it's not the bed length I'm after, it's the rails the bed sits on, end to end and side to side.

In need of a few measurements

Wondering if someone could provide the following measurements on an RB Ford with Penthouse:

Distance from the rear edge of the front doors to the front edge of the top.

Length and width of...

The bumper is nicer than your coffee table, would you drive it?

Inside: crappy 80s laminate, plastic trim
Outside: butcherblock bumper, full wood trim

Re: Which tire chain for 35/12.5 R 17 ?

That ratchet tightening system has a rubber strap incorporated into it. What's
the advantage of a chain and ratchet if there's a bungy cord at the other end?

Re: Which tire chain for 35/12.5 R 17 ?

Wouldn't we all. Other than air operated "automatic chains" for commercial vehicles, I think you're out of luck.

The key to chaining up efficiently is to put them away properly, ie. not tangled...

Re: Salvaging a Penthouse top

It's gonna need some work for sure. The front arms/hoop have quite a bend in them but the rest of the mechanism seems fine.

I'm leaning towards installing it on my 2008 E350. The roof cap profile...

Salvaging a Penthouse top

I salvaged this top from a 97' Dodge. Since I didn't have any machines to help me and I was working alone, it had to come apart on the spot. https://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/22/usyme5a2.jpg
