After a short search it seems that it is not a wet liner engine but that cavitation (aka "liner pitting" ) is still a problem for the 7.3. Bottom line is don't get cheap or lazy with your coolant...

You are absolutely correct in saying that its a little confusing. The amount of choices available and their respective compatibility is not as straightforward as it should be.
