Christopher Thwaites fab'd a similiar solution that I really like. He built steps that fold up when they hit something. Gravity keeps them down. Simple and slick. Now if I can just convince him to...

The stock passenger van running boards don't look bad in my opinion. They are black and can be coated with rhino/linex liner for added grip. I've seen them on Craigslist for under $200.
