I have now tried the Renergy panel and controller I bought. Works like a bas@#$d. No problems at all with output, you can almost hear the battery purring. Having messed with it a bit it still seems...

Finally broke down and bought a 100w panel, solar controller, roof-mount brackets and the necessary wire to set up a recharging system for the van. Got it from Renergy on fleabay for just under $200...

I went and looked at their fleabay store: A 100w panel, charge controller and basic wiring for $180, you need to add another $20 or so for mounts, extra wire etc. but not too bad a price.
