My "Diesel Suppliment 3rd Printing (2005)" simply referred me to the Owner's Guide. My attention span is such that I'm going to go back to ignoring my transmission fluid.

I think you have to be idling when you check it, so if you're checking it with the engine off for the "cold" reading that might explain it.
