Well, it seems like the root cause was a bad stock alternator. I replaced it with a 185A version from Nations Alternator and, knock on wood, all seems well now. De-tensioning the serp belt wasn't...

Thanks, DaveB. Scalf77 gave me some ideas to check out. Right now I'm leaning towards a bad alternator and/or possibly bad connections? Voltage at the batteries drops after starting and settling...
