The filter is about 3/4" from the exhaust at the nearest place, but most of it is much further (two cylinders orthogonal to each other). The exhaust does not have nearly enough freedom up by the end...

I installed ours on the transmission support cross-member, between the transmission and the exhaust. It is near the exhaust, but does not seem to get heated up by the exhaust pipe much (as tested by...
