I could be wrong but thought it depends if the roof is a smooth or ribbed top. Not that a fan can't be put on a ribbed top or that it hasn't been done but I don't think SMB would warranty it. Perhaps...

Other than a plus in cold weather, a hard top has no moving parts to fail, no canvas to worry about holes or rips, and a fan/vent is easier to install.

Yeah it's an issue for sure. When I have a friend who has a tent set up and I have to break camp when they don't, that it is a disadvantage. I do stow my sleeping bag and blanket on the PH bed and...

If I were planning on a cold weather van where my main goal is snow camping, the hard top vans have a big advantage; just the opposite in warm weather (IMO). For me it's more difficult to stay cool...
