Just remember if you have something on in the van that draws DC current, you'll be cycling your batteries down which can shorten their life. That all depends on what the draw is and how low you take...

Some types of batteries will form a memory so it's best to take them from full charge to a specified lower state, many time that value is 20 %.

Not so with AGM's. AGM's seem to be more affected...

Same here. My solar controller will quickly jump into the float mode when the alternator is running. Before I installed a high amp alternator it took longer before the controller switched to float...

I do like this idea. If you keep the alternator charge isolated from the house battery system but allow an inverter that has smart charging capabilities to power the inverter/charger, what you get...

Yes I do plug in on a regular basis if the refrigerator is running but I don't turn on the charge and let the refrigerator run off AC. Solar keeps the batteries up.

Actually that is kind of vague. The AGM house batteries must be kept at a voltage at or above 12.8. A good AGM will hold a charge for a month without any load put to it. If an AGM battery sits at a...

That's why a good charger with an amp display or amp meter is nice to have. As the battery fails you can see the amperage rise to abnormal levels indicating something is wrong. I don't want to scare...

yep, you just need the breaker on that feeds the onboard charger. Just be aware if your charger is not a smart charger and puts out more than about 5 amps, it's possible to overcharge your batteries....
