Could that be grease from the U-joint?

Pull the driveshaft and check the u-joints. Probably have to pull it anyway to work on the tank bracket.

My first thought was also a u-joint. When mine went out, they seemed fine when in place - solid, no play. But, when I pulled the driveshaft out both were stiff an nearly impossible to move.
