It's not the strength of the struts. It's the design of the mounts. When the lid is closed, the lid mount is below the body mount - and that means the strut is pushing the lid closed, not helping...

The top was hard for me to lift. When I put 2 bicycles up there, it was very difficult and impossible for my wife.

I removed 1 leaf and added shocks. Better, but not perfect.

The best part is the hitch is not compatible with any other. Makes it much harder to steal.

The way they were mounted was wrong!...

The SMB trailer was pricey. So, maybe you could find someone who has one. And take it to a trailer manufacturer and have them quote on making one. Maybe the price would be less than SMB wanted.
