Weekend in Assateaque Nat Seashore

Here on the East Coast we don't have a surplus of cool national and state parks like you westerners, but we do have a few nice spots. One of them is Assateaque National Seashore in Maryland. Nice weather was predicted for this weekend, so I took an impromptu solo getaway (sanctioned by my long-suffering wife) to camp down here (about three hours from Philadelphia). The park has both oceanfront and bayside camping. I've always preferred the bayside, and scored a nice direct-view spot.

Besides camping and relaxing, on this trip I also am doing my 2013 taxes on my computer, sitting here in my SMB. I figure camping in a beautiful national park and looking out over a bay view will take a bit of the sting out of throwing my money at the federal government.

Yup, wild horses aplenty down there still. Even walking through the campground. Cool to look at, but a bit of a nuisance after the novelty wears off. Kind of like the black bears in Yosemite.

Very nice. I'm supposed to go there a few days traveling all the east coast this summer
Any good surfing around there?

Thanks.

I'm not a surfer so can't really comment intelligently. But I have ocean kayaked there and done some mild kayak surfing there. I'd say it's as good as any location along the mid Atlantic, an probably better than NJ because of no jetties or other impediments. There's a good surfing culture down in Virginia Beach, too. They hold the East Coast Surfing Championships there every year.

Many thanks for your advices.

Love it! I used to live just 1 mile from there, right across the bridge. Have put in countless hours fishing the back bay between the O.C. inlet and your location. Good clamming right where you camped also.
