Alaska 2014

Anybody else heading to Alaska next summer?

I will be going north, probably leaving Seattle area mid June and coming back south mid July and would like to meet up with other travelers when our paths cross. I don't expect to be able to coordinate travels with others, since everyone has different priorities of things to see and do.

My current plan is to take the ferry north probably from Prince Rupert and getting off on at least one stop on the way and driving back down. Driving down gives me the chance to stay in Hyder and revisit the Salmon Glacier. While in Alaska I will have an open schedule (except for the reservations in Denali) and hope to visit:

Homer, Dalton Highway, Artic Circle (maybe the Artic Ocean), Valdez, Kennnicot, and more.

It might be nice to meet up in Denali and spend a few days together at the Teklanika Campground (3 day minimum stay). If you choose to stay there, be sure and get a 'TEK' pass for the bus. The bus is the only way to get around inside the park and the pass gives you unlimited use of the bus while camped at Teklanika.

I'm open to ideas and comments.

Mike

Re: Alaska 2014

I'm jealous Mike. Loved our Alaska trip in '08.

A last minute side trip for us was to Cordova and stayed at a campground at Childs Glacier. Can listen to the glacier groaning and moaning and calving all night long. It was a family favorite place of our entire trip.

My brother was going to try to get there this year when he did an Alaska trip, but apparently the access road was washed out. It traverses the Copper River Delta which takes out the road often, so if you try it, check conditions first. Only way to get to Cordova is by ferry.

The blog my wife did lives on http://jachofamilytrip.blogspot.com/ with links to select photos.

Enjoy!

Re: Alaska 2014

Don't forget to book a trip on the Alaskan railroad. A vital part of Alaska IMO.

Re: Alaska 2014

Hi Mike,

Janet and I will also head for Alaska leaving Indiana mid-May and return mid-August. We also plan to take the ferry from Prince Rupert, probably early June. It will be good to see you again! We are reading books on Alaska now.

Dave,

Hopefully one of the books is the Milepost. Don't leave home (for Alaska) without it.

Re: Alaska 2014

We are toying with the idea of going to Alaska, but would be going to Haines and Juneau by ferry, or maybe Skagway and tour those areas. We went to Denali last year and probably won't do it again. As we firm up our plans, we'll let ck back with you and see if our paths cross.

Re: Alaska 2014

Mike,
Glad you started this thread 'cause you've got us thinking. We will also go to Alaska 2014 as a part of a much longer trip. I've got a lot of research to do but would like to find the best time of the year to avoid as much rain as possible. If anyone has suggestions, please post them.

Re: Alaska 2014

We've been three times in June and had very little rain. And what rain we had was preferable to the forest fires in 2005.

Do a search in this forum for Alaska and check out some of the trip reports and see the blue skies.

Re: Alaska 2014

We went in 2003. Would really like to do it again.
Oh ya, our trip was pre-penthouse. Could not stand up straight for months after the trip.
