Quick trip to Big Bear....

Quick trip to Big Bear was meant to be for skiing but decided on a little offloading instead. Drove a groomed fire road above Big Bear yesterday and was surprised that a few gates were open leading up to the top of the ski resort. Maybe they are always open?

Drove right up to the top ski lift and parked behind the lodge. Very tempting to drive out onto the snow for a few photo ops. Decided not to press my luck and went into the lodge for a beer. Couple people asked if i had hiked up as I was the only one in shorts and tennis shoes at the top of the mountain.

Got a chance to experiment with the lockers a bit. In a bunch of spots along the fire road was a mud/snow tire track only on the passenger side. It was interesting that with just a small amount of mud and snow on one side of the van led to wheel spin and significant loss of traction. One side of the van was completely covered in mud.

Engaged the lockers and the van started to move without exsesive wheel spin and had much better control.

Full moon on the slopes outside our house at 10:00pm. Snowcats and moon lighting the snow.

Sunrise yesterday morning..

Nice. Sad to see so little snow, but glad you could take advantage.

Re: Quick trip to Big Bear....

Ya, it's very thin up here. Not all the runs are open. This is a pic from last year up here...

Re: Quick trip to Big Bear....

So you can drive up to the top of the lift and not get hassled? Free snowboarding?

Re: Quick trip to Big Bear....

You may get one run in till they check your ticket at the lift.

Chatted with a few people today and they said the top gates are normally locked. Must have lucked out!

One of my favorite shots of my SMB when we owned it. Gotta love snow in AZ in May.

Classic case of the "Grass is Greener..." I spent an hour and a half chipping large chucks of ice of the roof so I can take it down to the desert next weekend. All the new trip postings are making us winter folk jealous!
