Barrier Islands End of May

We have a 21 day trip in the planning, starting May 19.

As of now:

Michigan to overnight at Kentucky Horse Park

Biltmore Estate. two nights in hotel...allowing full day at Biltmore. Meeting SC friends there.

4 days w friends at there home in Fort Mill S.C. (15 miles south of Charlotte).

Then to Swan Quarter N.C. on May 27th for ferry to Ocracoke (part of Cape Hatteras National Shoreline. Looks like we want to stay at the Ocracoke National Shoreline Camp Ground for 3(?) nights at least and then drive Cape Hatteras.

Two nights on Cape Hatteras. One each at the south and north end of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Then to Kittyhawk and off the barrier islands.

Will then head up to Conn. and Mass. for 2-3 days of cemetery searching for 4-5 1670ish grave markers of ggggggrandparents on several family lines.

A few more places and then home again. MAYBE if time and feel like it up to Sackets Harbor and then to Port Perry Ont. for more grave marker searching.

Any input about the Barrier Islands. Looking more for wildlife, good restaurants, stars at night, and maybe local attractions.

Re: Barrier Islands End of May

Take some good bug spray, as the spring hatch of skeeters and flies should be out by then!

If you have time for more leisurely drive up north, a nice way to go is to take the free vehicle ferry from Currituck, NC, to Knotts Island, NC (at the southern tip of Virginia Beach). Currituck is right off the main route north from the Outer Banks (158). See http://www.knottsislandonline.com/travelguide/ferry.htm

Then take US 13 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which is a neat drive. If you are lucky you'll catch some ships from the US Atlantic fleet putting to sea from Naval Station Norfolk, or maybe see some SEALs running training ops in their small rubber boats. I believe you can free camp overnight in the large rest area at the bridge's northern end (I've seen campers there many times) if you want to boondock. The bathrooms are open 24 hours, too.

Taking US 13 north is a few more miles than going via I-95, but actually is usually faster because you miss all the DC, Baltimore, etc., traffic. It's also a lot more relaxing and scenic, going up the DelMarVa Peninsula. We used to live in Va Beach and would drive back to Philadelphia all the time, so we have tried both ways.

Chincoteague NWR is a short detour off Rt. 13, and then you can branch off Rt. 13 onto Rt. 113 to Assateague Island National Seashore, which has nice oceanfront and bayside camping. There are also a number of very nice Delaware state campgrounds up the coast, with Cape Henlopen State Park being one of the nicest.

If you have time you should spend a day at the horse park if you like horses at all. It is a wonderful facility. If I could work it out I would love to drive up and meet some fellow Chevrolet people.
Hope you have a great trip.

BrianW - thanks for the information we are adding it to our trip.

4x4sporty - not really in to horses. We have stayed there many times though at the campground. Great place.

Re: Barrier Islands End of May

LenS - I totally agree with what BrainW has said. I used to live in the Outer Banks and have taken that route a few times. It is a really nice drive. The Currituck/Knotts Ferry is awesome.

While driving through the Outer Banks you may want to stop off and see Jockey's Ridge. It is quite amazing. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/jori/main.php

Also, there is Wright Brothers Memorial. There is a small museum there and it's quite educational.

The town of Manteo/Roanoke Island which is off Rt. 64 and a short drive from Rt. 12 before you get to the "Banks", has a very nice Aquarium

Your trip that you have planned sounds awesome! Safe Travels and Enjoy!
