Idaho Travel Tip - Sportsman's Access

On a recent 3 week tour of Northern Idaho and Montana (trip report coming up), we had to traverse the south half of Idaho where there is little or no public land for boondocking.

We discovered what are called "Sportsman’s Access" spots. They are along all the secondary highways near rivers, creeks or reservoirs. They generally consist of a boat ramp or trail head, an outhouse and some flat parking spots. Camping is not regulated and free. None were crowded in July. Most were deserted, all had space available. May be different at peak hunting / fishing season. This description is based on seeing only about 5 of them but they were all pretty much the same. YMMV.

Now we no longer dread crossing the land of sage brush, bombing ranges, potato farms, lava and DOE nuclear reservations.

...heard theres talk of giving this fella his own reality show. way to go idaho!

somewhat related, but if you are headed through idaho and plan on staying around any of the burn areas or runoff zones from burn areas, might be a good idea to call ahead and confirm camping is currently allowed. my last trip by anderson ranch, both above and below the dam, we noticed that all the sportsman access areas have been turned into day use only areas due to flash flood concerns. in fact, coming back into cell range yesterday after a weekend in the hills, i had 10 or so flash flood warnings pop up on my phone from all over southern idaho. dont know if this is just until the ground stablizes and gets some regrowth, or if they are just converted period, but it sucks. lots of really nice campsites now not available

Could be worse, you could be in California.

But back on topic, the trip report is probably gonna be a bit different I'd suspect
