Boondocking / Off-grid camping in Idyllwild, CA area?

Hello there, highly-esteemed and resourceful off-grid-camping SMB community!

Q: Does anybody here have experience with/knowledge of the "Boondocking Options" for camping in the Idyllwild, CA area? (that they might share?)

A group of us (4 at the moment, spread across two SMB's) have decided to head up that way over the upcoming Labor Day weekend to camp/MTB, and campgrounds seem to be all booked. Our SMB's are fully-self-contained, but are 2WD and non-lifted, so as far as any suggested boondock sites/locations go, we can't do any that require driving rough/high-clearance 4WD trails (though we both drove in/out of Southern Utah's Gooseberry Mesa bumpy/sandy fire roads earlier this year no problem.)

Much thanks in advance for any insight/locales that any of you might feel kind enough to share!
Cheers/Best Regards --
the crew!
