New headliner for PH?

So I had a leak a in the PH a while back and have since resurface the PH roof with Raptor Liner. The leak stained the interior panel and buckled it in one area. I am looking into replacing that panel (thin wood panel on the ceiling). But, that got me thinking about doing something different. I'm tossing the idea around of removing the ceiling panels and replacing them with new ones that are built up a bit more with enough depth in them to place recessed LED lights and then covering the panels with fabric. This would allow me to replace the damaged panel, add better lighting, add a layer of insulation in the void space and possibly quiet the interior a bit.

What do you think?

New headliner for PH?

Have been thinking about this since this afternoon. It may work but my concern has to do with the two sections of the roof panel where the support bars slide. That area should remain wood so that the bars slide easily.

My other concern has to do with lowering the ceiling. Not sure how that will affect the support bars and the angle they are at. The penthouse is supported by the wood ceiling and the support bars. It you are lowering the ceiling then you are either raising the roof or lowering the bars which may affect them.

I like the idea of recessing the lights and having more insulation as well as a padded ceiling.

Let us know how it works out.

Re: New headliner for PH?

Thanks for the input! Food for thought for sure.
I'm thinking about bringing down the rest of the ceiling to around the thickness of where the crossbars mount to the roof. I would leave that area accessible, just wrap it in the same headliner material.
Another concern would be the flexion of the PH top itself. The top flexes a lot between the raised and lowered positions so whatever I build I need to make sure it's not overly rigid.

Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like underneath the paneling on the ceiling?

Yes, I had a leaking problem and had to replace the front roof panel awhile back. There is a thin layer of that RV bubble foil (Upper right hand corner) and then the fiberglass.

Thanks for the pic!
I just tore into mine. The plywood fell apart in my hands in the corner where it had been leaking.

Re: New headliner for PH?

This project has been far more complicated than I had anticipated. I should have taken the easy route and just replaced the damage panel.
I have made three separate lightweight insulated panels. I'm in the process of covering them with headliner material. Now I still need to find adequate recessed LED lights and shorter (1 3/4) J hooks.
So far I'm at 25lbs over factory weight. Not too bad I suppose.

Re: New headliner for PH?

A few pics of the progress so far. I ordered some recessed LED lights today so I haven't secured the panels to the ceiling yet. I just placed them for fitment. I opted to not use the smallest panel that I made because it didn't look right and also would interfere with the front J hooks. Without using the front panel I'm back under 23 lbs.

Seeing these pics makes me realize how much crap I have in the Man Cave.

Keeping weight on the panels to let the glue dry.

Re: New headliner for PH?

How does the thickness of the panels compare to the factory panels?
