Control Arm Cracks

2002 E-350 with Quigley 4WD conversion, lots of miles south of the border.

While doing an oil change yesterday I noticed a couple of hairline cracks in my control arms. The Quigley recall of the parts has expired but they will give me a 10% discount on if I buy all four at $540 + shipping. I'll be replacing them after we get our tax return, but in the meantime I'd like to pull the existing control arms, have the cracks welded up and a plate welded onto the open c-channel to beef them up.

-How difficult is it to remove and replace the control arms? It looks pretty straightforward, is there anything I should keep in mind during the Removal/Replacement? Can I remove all four and have all the work done at once or should I do it in pairs?

I'm sure this has been discussed quite a bit but a quick search didn't answer all of my questions regarding the R&R. I'll be posting this on the FordEnthusiasts forum as well.

Thanks for any input!

-Mark...

Re: Control Arm Cracks

Support the chassis on jack stands and the front axle separately on jack stands and remove them. You can use a ratchet strap to pull things back into place when installing them.

Weld up the cracks and "box in" the bottom with 0.125" strap. Replace the bushings if bad and save the $540 for something else.

Re: Control Arm Cracks

Thanks for the quick response! So all four at once as long as everything is supported?

Re: Control Arm Cracks

Sure, why not? That how it was installed in the first place.

Re: Control Arm Cracks

True enough, but they've done it a few more times than I have!
