I need to rid some noise and heat from engine through dog house in my 2002 SMB 7.3L. What type of material is best to use for this job?

I found helpful a somewhat different approach helped too:

Archoil 32 OZ (not 16 OZ) 9100 oil additive plus fuel additive. (Noise)
Ceramic coating and heat wrap and spray treatment for the two up pipes and down pipe. (Heat)

Then by removing the down pipe heat shield you have much more room for dog house vibration and noise reduction material.

My 77 dog house had a lame piece of fiberglass batting that was replaced with a bag of beanbag chair beads from Wally world. I caulked up any openings between the metal engine cover and plastic shell and poured the beads in with a wide mouth funnel through the ashtray hole. If you keep thumping the cover with your fist they settle nicely. You might want to do some ramrodding to get all the voids filled up and when you are done coat the inside of the hole with some glue to keep the beads in place.
Make really sure all the holes are caulked before you add the beads or you will have beads everywhere forever!

Our gas engine van came from the factory with sound damping and insulation. I would think the diesels would have even more - maybe yours is missing? I disassembled ours and added a mass-loaded vinyl sound barrier between the factory damping and insulation, then re-installed the insulation. It is quieter but I wasn't concerned so much with heat.

There are spray-on materials that claim to do both.

But the biggest noise reduction is to make sure the engine cover is sealed tightly to the floor - any gaps let lots of noise through.

I haven't taken it off again to see if it's still glued on.

I did much the same, but with dynamat and another layer of heat shield blanket then added the stock piece of fiberglass back.

Quite Ride Solutions makes a pre cut kit ready for install that I used on my 6.0 in addition to what was already there. You can add additional pieces for the footwell next to the engine compartment as well. It was easy to install and has helped from what I can tell.

I'm going to help a friend do this job on her new-to-her 7.3, a 2002. If it fits the 6.0 won't it work for a 7.3? All the doghouses are the same after 96 aren't they?

Also, does anyone know if you absolutely have to remove the downpipes shield if you add insulation to the doghouse. I'm not sure how to gauge the clearance there. I thought I would wrap the downpipe too.
