Suburban Hot Water Heater Maintenance?

I'm draining the hot water heater for the first time myself and there is lots of this white stuff:

The anode rod looks OK, but then again I don't know what it is supposed to look like:

So, what now? I think I should flush the h/w tank either by leaving the anode rod out and running city water in, or by closing the h/w bypass and running water in through the annode rod hole with a smaller tube.

Also, when do I need to replace the annode rod, and what else should I be doing?

Suburban Hot Water Maintainance

Jage , Here is the suggested procedure
#1 Turn your water off City/ Pump .
#2 Pull Anode Plug and drain Water , Or open Small Petcock if you have one
#3 open the Pressure Relief valve .
#4 Connect to city water and run/flush the tan for five to ten minutes, this should break loose the Water Scale inside of the tank .
#5 Allow to drain and replace Anode Rod , close Drain , close Pressure relief valve , open hot water side of your faucet to bleed air and the job is done .
Jage I posted Photo's for you in my Gallery showing the relative dimensions of the Anode and Relief Valve , it would appear that you have 1/3rd of your Anode used up at this time . With regard to the White Powder like substance that you found , that is Water Scale and is perfectly normal and is a good indication that your Anode is doing it's job .

P.S Be sure to use Teflon Tape on your reinstall

You should replace your sacrificial anode once a year. $12.00.

Jage ,
Along with the once a year change out of the Anode you should also change out the Pressure Relief Valve , less than $20.00 . I carry spares of each as we use the Shower/Heater with some frequency , in other words lot's of dirty Grandchildren and Saltwater rinses .
