Sliding door clearance for large tires?

With a sliding side door on my van, tire choice is limited to stock size tires due to clearance issues with the door. Seems I remember reading a few years back about an "Extended Kick Out" mechanism for the lower section of the door that would kick the door out further to clear large tires. Does anyone have any information on this...where to buy?

Re: Sliding door clearance for large tires?

I think the only place that does sliding door extenders for late model/1992 up Ford vans is Quadvans in Portland,OR.

http://www.quadvan.com/

It is not a simple task like the older sliding doors from what I understand and youmay even have to take the van up there to have it done.

We have modified the door and cleared 35 x12.50s. You would never know it.

Any clues as to how you did it?

Or how or where someone else could get it done?

Pie cut; we can do it at Complete Fabrication in El Cajon (San Diego) - 2 to 3 hrs labor.

Never too late...

Before, it hits the tire:

After it opens fully:

I'll post another after paint.

Instead of Paint we "Raptor" Lined it when we did the top of the van (surfer owns it and doesn't want the top to rust out).

Cool Ramsey. That's a simple idea. I've seen a modified slider mechanism but it seems much more durable to leave that alone and just cut the bodywork out of the way as you have done. Neat.

Re: Sliding door clearance for large tires?

I have the same problem with my Express AWD with 33" tires. I was thinking to modify the hinges but the way you made it, it's not so bad. The only thing is the clearance if I put Fendre Flares. I will probably need more then what you have. Here in Canada, we dont have the right to ride with tire that pass the fender so we have to put fender flare and I dont know if I will have enough place with your modification.

But honestly, I will start with your modification till I find nice fender flare for my van. Bushwaker dont make fender for Express Van and I really dont like the Pacer Fender Flare that I bough and never install!!!

Thanks for your picture!!!

Re: Sliding door clearance for large tires?

Mgmetalworks sold me a bracket that fits great and successfully cleared the wheel with space to add a small fender flare.
