Ford E250 SMB, Turn signals and hazards are out.

The hazards and turn signals on our 1993 E250 are not functioning. The lights do not illuminate and the lights on the dash(to let you know your signal is on) are not illuminating either.

Any help or ideas to start troubleshooting?

Thanks,

BB

check your fuses....might have just blown and need to be replaced or there is a short going on somewhere that caused them to blow. try replacing first, if they go again, you've got a short somewhere in the system. have someone with a meter test between 2 points for continuity to track where the short is.

Re: Ford E250 SMB, Turn signals and hazards are out.

Please clarify: is it just your turn signals/hazards that don't work, or the headlights, too? If just the turn signals, have you replaced the flasher? I'd start there. I think newer E-vans have electronic flashers, but I could be wrong. I have a 98 and it's a relay-type, near the kick-panel fuse box on the driver's side.

Could also be the "multifunction switch" (the stalk on the steering column that controls turn signals, high beams, etc.).

My turn signals have been acting weird lately and I haven't fully engaged with troubleshooting yet, but I'm thinking it's the switch. I've already replaced the flasher.

It's only the turn signals/hazard. The headlights and brake lights are fine, as are the windshield wipers.

Thoughts? I'll likely go grab the flasher today and see if that's it.

The flasher is such a cheap thing to try, that I would definitely give that a shot. Like $12 or thereabouts. At least you can rule that out, then, if the problem persists.

What year is your van?

The van is a 1993.

I tried the new flasher last night.....no improvement.

Any other ideas? All the fuses are intact.

Thanks all!

Re: Ford E250 SMB, Turn signals and hazards are out.

I've had a couple of different wires some loose behind the dash on my 2009 E250. Unfortunately I can't show pictures because they were repaired by the dealer under warranty.

I was told that the wires had pulled loose right at a connector and had to be pushed back in.

Would tilting the wheel make a connection issue? You might try moving that to see if it does anything.

Re: Ford E250 SMB, Turn signals and hazards are out.

The "multi-function switch" (aka turn signal stalk) is pretty notorious for going out. This is one part where you're better off with a Napa Echlin replacement instead of a Ford replacement. Any fleet with older Fords will probably have boxes of bad switches. Unfortunately the diagnostics procedure for testing it is "replace with known good part".

BTW - are you sure you checked the right fuses? The ones under the hood only do trailer lights. The ones under the dash do the van lights.

@carringb, Thanks for the hint on the Napa part for the switch. I was just going to order a Ford one to replace mine.

@BrianBlair, see my earlier post for a link to a how-to on replacing this switch. Doesn't look too hard to do. I'm probably going to do mine this weekend if I can find the time.
