auxillary batteries

This is probably a dumb question......We have 2 auxiliary batteries just wondering how often they should be replaced.

Re: auxillary batteries

Depends on how well you've kept up with proper charging and discharging for the most part. Battery companies that use high quality lead have batteries that tend to last longer. A good rule of thumb is about 4-5 years on lesser grade batteries and 6 or more years on high grade batteries. I still have a Lifeline that is in great shape (not in my van) from 2006 that is used as a power supply.

Re: auxillary batteries

Age is certainly a factor, but I think number of cycles and how deep each discharge cycle is is even more important in determining battery life. A battery can wear out in less than a year if used often enough. Fortunately most RVers don't discharge their batteries that often or that deep.

And as Dave stated, original battery quality and care is important also. In my opinion there are too many variables to use time as a good estimate.

Re: auxillary batteries

I'm still using my house battery at 10 years old, but it has significantly less capacity. Still enough for one night's camping, though.

Re: auxillary batteries

You need to throw in that different styles of batteries respond differently to ageing as well as cycling. Plus several short minimal cycles can do damage to some batteries as well as applying too high of a load in a short period. Applying an extra high load to too small of a battery for a short period of time can do damage even if it preforms its task. Heat is another issue. So yeah, there are several factors to consider.

For the most part we all deal with AGM batteries now days but there are some out there using wet cell types and those have different rules to follow. I suggest at least reading this site for information. It covers quite a bit:
