Stay Grounded
Earlier today I spotted a white E350 Quigley EB that had a loaded roof rack, bumpers, front and rear Warn Winches on the side of the road in El Pescadero, about 5 miles south of Todos Santos, B.C.S.
A few hours later we pulled into the Pemex/OXXO to get some Ice Cream and saw the same van parked off to the side with the hood up and the owner trying to jump start it with a Jumper Box.
I figured I'd offer a hand... Owner said it wouldn't start and asked if I had jumper cables. Before digging them out, I had him turn the key so I could see the problem -- the starter solenoid was just clicking. I suspected a bad ground based on years of experience (it is almost always a ground, not the hot side) and had him crank it again while I put my hand on the ground cable which I could feel getting hot (too much resistance - bad ground). I loaded up the connection by twisting the cable and the motor cranked with full force and fired up the 7.3L
I showed the owner where he need to clean and tighten the grounds.
Moral of the story - stay grounded!
Clean and tighten all connections, especially grounds.
