Unusual location for AC unit in SMB. Anyone ever seen this?
I was looking at a 2012 SMB posted on Ebay just now, and saw a normal home AC unit mounted on the SIDE of the van where a window would normally go. I've never seen this on a SMB, but it looks pretty much OEM. Does anyone have any info on this? Looks similar to how Safari Condo mounts theirs on the rear of their Chevy vans.
See the Ebay listing and pics below. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121720547147

I emailed the Ebay seller and got this response about that AC unit install:
"Sportsmobile "did not" install the AC unit, a local Truck & RV shop installed it. It can be removed and a window can be reinstalled into the space. The owner does not have the original window or hardware, however she does have the trim and shades from the original window space. I did go look at the install, and it has a thick bead of clear silicone around the whole unit on the outside between the van and the housing unit. Not sure if this would affect the paint."
Wish this was local, I'd love to see the install in person.

For my needs it would have to be on one of the back doors like I've seen on some other vans. My ladders already take enough damage.

Ooh, good point Dave. When I saw that I only thought about vision out of the right mirror. If I can see out of the mirror it would be ok. I didn't think about limbs and other..........obstacles That would definitely be a showstopper for me come to think of it. OTOH, those $125 dollar air conditioners may just be cheaper than windows!

Our 89 had one mounted in the door. The PO had removed the drivers side window, built a frame and mounted the AC unit. I removed it because every time it rained water would soak the carpet. Took me a while to figure out where the leak was. The caulk on the outside looked good.

I've seen a small window ac mounted on the side of a camper/van that would slide into an interior cabinet while not in use (while driving) . ac would slide through the opening of a locking access door . similar to this..
