AC Blower Motor Issue

2005 E350 6.0. Looking for some diagnostic feedback.

Started the van, turned on the AC, drove 1 mile to the gas station - no problems. When I restarted the van, the AC blower motor did not work in normal or max AC. I flipped the dial through all the settings and it did work on "Floor" mode, but nothing else. 10 minutes later as I flipped through the settings again it worked a very brief time in normal mode, but then quit and has not worked since.

I can hear the AC compression kick in and cold air does come through the vents when moving, but the blower does not work in any setting.

Based on the previous owners docs, I see the AC blower motor was just replaced in Jan of 2015

Could this be a dead blower motor again or does this sound like a relay type issue?

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Sounds to me like it could be a vacuum line leak.

is this that common vacuum leak where people appear to pull fenders and cut through fender liners to access the hose or create PVC chambers and such? Or could this be a very easily accessible vacuum leak?

Any thoughts on why a vacuum leak would prevent the blower from blowing?

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

I think what Herb is referring to is when a vac leak keeps the directional door from switching between modes. I had that happen and a split line kept it in the defrost mode.

Are you saying that the fan worked for a while then completely stopped... no air out of any ducts, def, dash or floor?

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Correct. No forced air at all. It was sporadic just for the 10-15 minutes that I fussed with the knobs, now nothing.

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Should be easy to check for power to the fan at the connector under the hood.

Note: I had a lot of warranty replacements of aftermarket fan motors, within a year. Seem like none of them are as good as OEM. So just because its nearly new doesn't mean its not bad.

I doubt its a relay. Only high runs through the relay. The other speed run through the resistor.

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Thanks, Brian. I'll poke around and see if the blower is getting power once the switches are on.

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Blower motor is getting power from the one and only harness attached to it. Is there anything else that also controls the motor or is it safe to say the motor is not working?

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

As one last test run a 10 gauge wire directly from the + battery terminal to the blower motor terminal---if it still doesn't work the motor has failed.

I'm with CarriingB here----an OEM motor is about $70 and are soooooooo much better than almost any aftermarket brand or version I've ever encountered.

Keep in mind that motor runs almost continually when engine is running---lots of accumulated hours, hard to imagine they last as long as they do.

Re: AC Blower Motor Issue

Thanks, JWA. I'll def run the test. I've already sourced a Motorcraft motor for $70 and the install looks easy enough
