ABS Light On

Hoping this is not going to cost me a arm and a leg...

I was heading to Vegas on Sat towing a 5 x 8 trailer and the ABS light came on and stayed on. Anyone familiar with this? The dealership I used to take it to has closed and the other local one I have had some bad luck with.

Re: ABS Light On

My '08 does the same thing all the time. When I turn the ignition off, it resets itself and the light goes out. Ford says they don't know why it does that!

Re: ABS Light On

I think that's the A Bailout Soon (ABS) indicator.

Re: ABS Light On

I have the same issue as Skywagon. When it was on one time, I was near a large, snow covered, parking lot and I tried my brakes there and even though the ABS lite was on, the ABS part of the brakes was working. I got the same answer from Ford. You can always pull the lite bulb....

Re: ABS Light On

Mine came on several times during the second day of the 4X4 training class but would reset itself when I restarted the engine. Never has come on since. Break petal seamed a little low then but is fine now.????

Re: ABS Light On

Ours was similar to Angels.

It came on the second day of 3 days offroad. It was off and on that day, but has not been seen since.

Re: ABS Light On

I've heard a common cause of the abs light coming on is the wheel sensors aren't picking up a signal (usually from the front wheels). Blasting the inside of the rims with a high pressure water jet will often remove the brake dust and road debris to restore normal function.

Having any important warning light (like the abs or check engine) come on is alarming to say the least. It would be nice if they could somehow set up the lights in a tiered or importance ranking. Such as this one means "stop immediately and check this out" or "this isn't critical, check it when you can" kind of lights.

I had the check engine light come on in our old Ford van loaded to the gills towing heavy up the Baker Grade in 100+ degree heat on the first day of a 2-week vacation and about freaked out. Pulled over and checked everything -- all good as far as I could see. Got home w/o incident and called the Ford dealer, and the service dept said "Oh, that could be because your gas cap was loose"....... I'm sorry but I don't want to be pulling over on the freeway to investigate a warning light because my gas cap might be loose.

I guess there's more than one reason why they're referred to as "idiot lights". You don't want your warning lights to be a Boy Who Cried Wolf situation......
