Re: What Camera does everyone use? Pics
It's really not going to matter much as far as picture quality. THe hardware is all fine, the hard part is finding the right light, angle, subject, etc.
I have a 10 year old Nikon D70 and it still takes fantastic pictures (although the new ones are much, much better in low-light, high-iso conditions).
If i was buying one now, i'd be sure to get one that does video, but i think maybe they mostly all do now...

Could be, my camera uses SD cards to store pics/video, but I found out that I need to have an SD card with a very high transfer speed for the video to work more than a second or two before the buffer maxes out. Not necessarily a big deal, but make sure to budget for one. I just picked up a 32GB SD card with a 30MB/second transfer rate. Was not cheap.

Re: What Camera does everyone use? Pics
What Troy said.
All cameras today give pretty good quality. Since your wife 'wants to get into photography' then the approach changes. A camera is just a tool. There's quite a difference between taking a nice picture and creating a photographic image. Huge. Plenty of opportunity to learn photography. Your local camera store probably has classes. Hang out with friends that are really into this. Easily find gobs of online tutorials and classes on video. Look at work by other accomplished photographers and see what moves you, and what you want to emulate. Use a tripod and practice. Have your work critiqued. Hang out at fredmiranda.com and naturephotographer.net. Look at photographer websites like mine. Get inspired. Get out in the field early. Save your money for gear!

Re: What Camera does everyone use? Pics
For someone wanting to 'get into photography' I would suggest a simple point and shoot camera to start. Let them find the joy in taking pictures, proper framing, etc. Then when they want to evolve to the next step they will have a better idea of what they need/want in a camera.
We found a full featured SLR daunting. Got a simple point and shoot and have slowly moved up. So, we now have 5 cameras. Had we only stayed with the first, really great camera, we would have given up a long time ago.
Kind of like starting with a tent and moving up to pickup camper and onto a Sportsmobile. Had we started with a big RV, we would have sold it and quit camping years ago.

Re: What Camera does everyone use? Pics
My wife thought she wanted an SLR but after a bunch of research went with a compact super zoom (Canon S5is). They are much more compact and less expensive than an SLR, and will do many things.
She likes it better than a point-and-shoot because it has a fairly good viewfinder, and it is much easier to hold onto and keep still because it fits her hand. The larger bodies also have room for more dedicated controls rather than relying on menus for many functions.
