Using Yakima roof racks

I'm ordering a new EB 350 with a PH top. I'm pretty sure I want to use a Yakima roof rack. Should I have SMB West install their rails on the top? Will the Yakima equipment be compatible?
Also, I sometimes judge open field coursing dogs and standing on the top would be very, very helpfully.
Is there a Yakima rack I can stand/sit on?

Thanks,
Frank

PS: besides standing on it, we will probably be carrying kayaks and or a storage box on the top.

Re: Using Yakima roof racks

If you plan on using the roof as a deck, I don't really recommend Yakima bars. They aren't all the stiff on their own, and by the time you added something to sit and stand on (e.g: load warrior basket and a plywood floor) you'll end up heavier than if you just went with an Alluminess rack.

I used to run all Yakima racks, but in the end a full rack just works better, at least for me. No more bent bars, worn out towers, or a flexy platform.

Re: Using Yakima roof racks

I used Yakima racks, and I agree with the advice about standing on anything mounted on them. Mine mount with flat plates set on top, and with 48" bars. And they're pretty far apart. I could probably stand on 'em, but wouldn't. The angles involved also mean that big weight wants to pull the brackets out by levering them. Might not be the case if mounted on the side, but I doubt it. Usually there's enough room up there to step around them. Or design the rack that way. Or just get the Aluminess; they're designed for the penthouse. If I did permanent carrying up there I'd go with that over my Yakima's any day.

Re: Using Yakima roof racks

Thanks for the advice,
We ended up going with the Aluminess double loop rack with a slat floor.

Thanks again,
Frank

Re: Using Yakima roof racks

I've got the Yakima rails on my PH top installed by SMB. I walk on the top and simply avoid the rails and bike rack bars. Not that hard.
