Journal apps?

I had been looking for something to document photos I take. I can add metadata if I load them into my iPad or a laptop, but I don't sometimes for days. Audio notes don't really sync. I tend to take photos with my phone as a reference, and since that also automatically gives me location info, but I haven't even been able to find a way to annotate those with text.

Someone turned me on to Day One, which is actually a journal application. I must say it has a great interface, and is really handy for documenting trips. What I don't like is that I am somewhat limited in what I can add (extra photos for one entry, maps) but it does take its own photos, geolocates, and even drops in current weather. Which turned out to be rather nice. It can sync via Dropbox. I also don't like that you can't make several different journals.

Now I'm thinking of using it kinda like a semi-SPOT for nonemergency itinerary updates.

Anyone got any better alternatives?

That sounds interesting......so how would this work? Someone else access the dropbox data via the cloud?

Re: Journal apps?

I was thinking of emailing entries. Some of my friends use SPOT, and I get these terse "here's where I am" messages. Fine, if useless except for showing location on a map. Wouldn't be available off the grid, of course. Emails from DayOne don't include photos, however. They read thus:

----
Date: February 1, 2014 at 9:06 AM
Tags: Camp, Coast camping, OR
Location: Sixes, OR, United States
Weather: 45° Cloudy

Leaving Cape Blanco. Stayed in site 28A; close to road to beach. Beautiful night last night; could see Milky Way. I didn't realize the lighthouse was operational; very slick light show.

Locals from Brookings said cutthroat running; they need first 2"+ rainfall (and so now are about 2 months late). They get big salmon too. Says it's cool to take trail from trailhead on the way in and walk to River mouth; sea lions hang there to salmon fish. Verified its OK to drive on beach.

-----

Reminds me of my mother giving me postcards to mail when I went on camping trips with the neighbors. I'd write hardly anything, but she could look at the postmarks to see where I was and when.

You could also tweet (140 characters, though), or send to Foursquare (which I don't use). I suspect there's probably something similar that would post these in a blog, but haven't sorted that yet. I like DayOne because of the simplicity and clarity of the interface; if it gets to be a blog client it will probably be too much to use quickly on the phone. It would also be nice if you could run two, one public and one private. Any suggestions welcome.
