Fishing pole transport and storage?

We regularly carry 5-6 fishing poles when the family heads out for a day of stream or lake fishing in the Sierras. Usually spinning setups, with an occasional fly rod.

My transport and storage method is to just lay them flat on a bench seat in the back of the van. Not ideal because they move around on bumpy roads and either become tangled or fall onto the floor.....and then become tangled.

Curious how others are transporting fishing poles (usually 4-6) either inside or on an exterior rack.

Thanks

R

Re: Fishing pole transport and storage?

I had the same problem to overcome a couple of years ago.

It seemed there was no convenient place that I could both store and keep safe our fishing rods.

We ended up with a LARGE PVC pipe (6 inches I think) and a Contractors locking lid (that was the hard piece to find).

This provides space for at least a half dozen rods, and I think more. It provides protection and security.

The pipe is mounted on the PHT with a multi-use Yakima mount that is perfect for a round tube.

If you need photos, I can find or get some, and I might even be able to find the lockable contractors lid provider.

This solution has worked great for us.

Both Flambeau and Plano make cases but I'm sure there are more out there. I keep my Loomis rod and reel in a arrow scabbard but it's a short two piece rod and ultra light reel.

Expensive but made to go on the roof rack, I'd think it's more resistant to sun and rain.

This is my setup. A couple of small bungees hold them in place and the poles are always ready. Kind of a pricey custom setup but I love the convenience.

Here is another option:

Never seen them in person but a cool concept. Suction cups or magnets.

Yikes, I just can't leave a rod and reel that cost 300 bucks or more to the dust dirt and vibration of trail travel. They have to be in some kind of case.

I have used this type of rod holder for years guiding with no problems both suction cup and magnetic but the magnetic ones work the best even at highway speeds..I have had 3k + on my hood at 65 mph  this method is used mainly from the guide shop to launch or at the end of the day shuttling back to the clients rig or when I'm fishing on my own and going from spot to spot saves tons of valuable fishing time.

This is a great example of what I want. Secure for road transport, but also just grab and go when you arrive at your spot. Did you buy this somewhere or have it custom fabricated?

I will also check the rodmounts website for additional ideas.

Thanks to all for the input.

Re: Fishing pole transport and storage?

Why not fabricate a mount onto a safari rack where they can sit the full length of the van? I have thought of such a setup but have had no need thus far.
