Boondock Water Filtering System

Just before our July trip to Montana, we purchased on of these...

http://www.amazon.com/Platypus-Gravi...s+water+filter

We used it 4 or 5 times and it worked great. The only hassle was disconnecting the Clean bag and carrying it inside to pour through a funnel into the tank. So I got rid of the Clean side bag and with a $7 kludge of adapters went from surgical tube to 3/4" garden hose.

Now it just attaches to the City Water inlet and directly into the main tank.

This will be standard equipment on all our future trips.

You DIY types can save about $50 if you just buy the filter and supply your own surgical tubing and intake bucket.

Great idea, and one that I could easily use with my teardrop water tank.

I did a quick search on gravity water filters, and saw that Katadyn has one too, as well as a few others. Did anything in particular make you pick the Platypus?

No. I just got tired of comparing specs and picked a likely looking one. 2 Day free shipping with Amazon Prime helped decide. That unit from REI looks good too. Cheaper and more capacity.

I do like that the Platypus is designed to be back-flushed, where the Katadyn is not designed to be, though it seems that some people do back-flush it.

Brilliant. We like the Platypus and this is a big help. Now, about the pump or suction system to feed from the stream . . . .

Sawyer also makes a nice 4-liter filter that is designed to be back flushed. Same style design.

Re: Boondock Water Filtering System

I just came across a Platypus Bottle Kit which only provide the 'dirty water' bag, the filter, and the tubing, and some bottle adapters, which sounds like all that's really needed, though you now have an extra water bag that can be your spare bag. The Bottle Kit is only based on the 2.0L version though, so a lot more filling would be required.

Re: Boondock Water Filtering System

Those are awesome and I feel like an old man now. I have so many memories of squatting next to a stream and pumping non-stop to fill up my Naglene water bottles with my heavy, ceramic filter.

Yes, the Platypus filter stays cleaner by backflushing. It's supposed to filter up to 1500 gal before replacement. That's probably more use than I'll get out of it in this lifetime.

Re: Boondock Water Filtering System

Just out of curiosity, are you having to squeeze the bag to get the water to feed into the water inlet? Or will it gravity feed into the inlet?
