Wildlife / Game camera?
I'm looking for a wildlife/game camera aka trail camera. I'd prefer something with flash and color photos (as opposed to IR) but I'm open to advice. Purpose is backyard wildlife, although I think it would be pretty cool on the SMB when camping.
I'm looking for high resolution, photo clarity and ease of use. Capacity and battery life are secondary (I'm not setting this up on a trail for weeks). I haven't even started the research, so I figured I'd start here and see if anyone has tread this path before, before I did.

My brother has several cameras setup. He might have some knowledge to share with you - He's mostly retired so what else would he doing! Here is his blog http://tgo2002.blogspot.com/2014/04/trailcam-check.html Maybe try his blog first for contact, not sure if he has any contact me links. Tell him brother Pat referred you. If no answer then PM me and I'll send you his email.

Re: Wildlife / Game camera?
Not sure what you mean by a 'trail camera'. I've shot a lot of wildlife and birds while hiking trails and it's basically about using a long lens, tripod, and having Ai Servo to follow-focus the creatures. With the distances that you typically are from your subject, flash is not usually used, tho there are some 'telephoto' flash attachment gizmos available. Check out the Africa and British Columbia galleries on my photo site.

I think Jage is looking for the kind of camera you tack to tree and come back later to see what walked in front of it. Hi-Res version.

Smart. Get it set up now and your daughters will never question it, then you can use it in 12 or 15 years to ID their suitors when they start calling in the middle of the night.

Re: Wildlife / Game camera?
What good does it do for hunting? To show you the creatures that you could have killed yesterday but were in the wrong place?

Most are creatures of habit and use the same trails daily just like people going to work. Sometimes you strike out though cause you never know when an animals weekend starts

Re: Wildlife / Game camera?
I researched those a while ago. You can do some pretty cool stuff. Not only motion detect, with or without night illumination, but also timed intervals. So set it up somewhere to capture sunrise and sunset.
Some allow external power, and have small viewers built in, so you can check if you've got anything. At the upper end, with some you can throw in a SIM card and they'll email you pix, assuming you're in cell range. There are bazillions of 'em, and even iPhone or Android mapping apps so you can keep track of where you left them. And some video and pictures are pretty cool, not to mention folks have captured wildlife that is seldom seen (like that wolverine in CA) (think that was DFG, which uses 'em).
Let us know what you find.
BTW, if you own a Canon you can hack the firmware via CDHK and add motion detection to any old Powershot point and shoot. I did it with a couple of A540s, and got some fun results outside the van...but mostly people. And it killed the batteries pretty quickly. Was gonna devise a solution for that, but didn't bother. You can also shoot RAW and use faster shutter speeds, a couple of types of intervalometers, etc. Really fun.

Re: Wildlife / Game camera?
I have bought and used almost all of the trail cams out there. The best overall cam is the Moultrie M80 or M100. I just purchased some of the M 500's and put them in the field a month ago. Going to check on them in a few weeks. All use 8 AA batteries and usually last for thousands of pics per battery change. Don't buy anything with "D" or " C" battery power.
