Diesel cooking stove

Anyone out there had any experience with a diesel cooking stove? I'm talking 2 burner to replace the propane stove in a Sprinter. The propane tank and stove have not been installed yet so if I can get some feedback (positive) on a small diesel stove I'll go with that.

I don't have time to check but I think the Badgers put one in, see BadgerTrek.com under the van rebuild section.

Re: Diesel cooking stove

We had a Wallas on our last boat and really loved it. However it was fairly pricey, and because we mostly cook outside with the Sportsmobile, we elected to go with the little cheapo BUTANE stoves that SMB sells, and have been more than happy with those.

Webasto has just developped this one:

Here is what I got back from the SMB folks upon asking about Webasto products:

"# The Webasto dual top is unfortunately not UL listed and therefore cannot be installed in US made RVs. We can do the cooktop…just not the dual top.
# The Webasto stove would be doable. It just got approved for use in the US. I am waiting for shipment of our first unit. I expect it to cost between $2500 and $3000 installed."

Hope it helps.

Re: Diesel cooking stove

Sportsmobile West does have a Webasto Diesel and is about to install it in a van It is now UL approved for RV use. At least that is what I was told by SMB.

Dave,

see Andrew's post above for some prices I provided directly from SMB West... but to recap $2500-3000 installed.

I was looking to get one in my Sprinter they (SMBW) are building out now so that I could be all diesel. I decided to pass based on some reviews I read online (ie horror stories - some guy bought 2 just so that he always has a spare when the other is sent back for repairs!) . I also downloaded the service manual for the Webasto cook top and concluded it was far to complicated (and fragile) a piece of equipment for "my" RV (I am pretty hard on things). Besides the rather complex technology that makes the thing run (ie computer circuitry), you have to be very careful with the top (ie easily scratched.) Add to that my concerns about it functioning well at altitude (I live in CO) and that was enough for me to say no. Maybe after they have been around awhile in the US, I will reconsider.

they have been in European RVs for awhile...

Re: Diesel cooking stove

Man, that's way too much for me. I figured it would be cheaper if there are fuel lines already plummed for the Espar equipment (which I have) but it sounds like you are installing the Espar stuff also. I wonder what Earthromer uses? 2.5K is way overpriced IMO. I'm still leaning toward a propane burner installed with an outside hook up. I always carry a small tank with me anyway. It's rare when I cook inside; usually poor weather only. It would be easy to hook up a tank when needed.

Re: Diesel cooking stove

I'm leaning heavily toward a propane water heater and cook stove. Rented a van in New Zealand that was equipped like that and it was seamless. Diesel sounded like a good idea until I started pricing it out along with an Espar Hydronics and Flate Plate system. It would be great to go all diesel but not at that price.

Re: Diesel cooking stove

I don't mind the propane. I could always use the extra space they take up, but despite the fact that I insist topping off before every trip it's not that big of a deal, and I really could get by going a lot longer.
