Ice Chests

Although I have a larger refrigerator in the van, I still need to haul an Ice Chest for adult beverages or ice. It always seems to be a limiting factor when in the backcountry mainly the dreaded "running out of ice for the mixed drinks!” Hopefully the "Oh No, the ice has melted" will be a thing of the past. I thought about a small electric unit to keep the ice longer but wanted something for the SMB trailer that has no power.
I just bought a small Yeti cooler.

The insulation is very thick making the storage inside small compared to the outside dimensions but for what I want if for I'm hoping it'll work.

I plan on using dry ice to keep the drinking ice cold. Does anybody see a problem with this health wise?
I've done it before and am still alive so the off gassing didn't seem to affect me. The ice chest is designed for dry ice.

It's also Yogi rated and lockable. These things are very heavy duty so I hope it lives up to its reputation.

Most of the reviews were 5 star but some claimed it matters more on how many times the lid is opened and closed. Time and temp will tell.

Re: Ice Chests

I'd have to do like Mike and re-do the suspension. I mean as much as I actually use my trailer, I don't think it's the way to go. If I were to do the campground thing often, it would be more proactive to think about a refrigerator and standalone power system for it.

Re: Ice Chests

I have the 50qt with the camo seat cushion - My buddies 45qt Yeti jumped out of the back of his pickup truck and the Jeep behind him hit it and bounced it down the embankment about 8’ and it didn’t open, it just has black scuffs on it. My personal experience with Yeti coolers has been that they are INDESTRUCTIBLE and will probably outlast me and my van. I find that they are way better at keeping things cold than cheep coolers but only keep things cold marginally better or the same as other top of the line coolers.

Re: Ice Chests

I am happy with a marine ice chest. And every town drain the water and replace ice. If away from town then will store the ice chest in a creek etc. Though the yeti looks like is is well insulated and indestructible.

Re: Ice Chests

Dry ice can mess up standard coolers; the plastic will crack or break very easily and I want to try the dry ice to keep the standard stuff from melting so quick. Having to drive 20 miles in steep terrain just so I can have a mixed drink is not cost effective. Also, if its cold outside and I'm running the heater, leaving the ice chest outside won't bother me as much in bear country.

As long as the fumes don't get me, I think I'll be OK hauling one of these. I was surprised the cost of even some of the Colemans. A little extra cost didn't bother me.

Re: Ice Chests

i thought dry ice creates pressure as it sublimates which complicates using it in a cooler

Re: Ice Chests

The only problem I've had in the past has been the ice chest got so cold it cracked the plastic, and it got so cold the drinks froze (a buddy had his drinks blow up). Anything that has a specific gravity heavier than air can be a problem with asphyxiation but so far my van has so much ventilation that I'm not too worried about it plus I sleep up top. I never really thought about the pressure thing but I doubt it will be a problem. I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. POW
