How long do the V10s and V8s last?

Everyone has heard how the 7.3 diesel can last 500k miles or so. But, how long do the gas E350s last in comparison? What should you expect? 150k-200k before all the replacement costs starts getting out of hand? I'm looking at a V10 van with 130k on it and debating if it's worth the "risk"...

I know of V10's that have over 500K miles on them.

Looks like his website is dead, but one guy got 1.3 million miles on a stock 5.4 Econoline. Changed oil every 10,000 miles.

Re: How long do the V10s and V8s last?

Theres a member here named carringb that drives the crap out of his V10 and I think it has over 200k hard miles. Seems the better the maintenance is kept up, the longer the motor will live, but these motors seem to have a pretty good track record. I just recently bought my 05 E350 with the V10 with 106k miles. The mileage didnt bother me a bit and I feel pretty confident that it will last quite a while.

I'm guessing the common denominator in ANY of the high mileage engines (gas or diesel), is proper maintenance.

Finding out if the current owner has service records should go a long way to giving you more confidence in the motor.

Re: How long do the V10s and V8s last?

My take is it's a machine like any other machine. It might last forever or go tits up tomorrow. Proper maintenance is essential but offers no guarantees. My 2002 5.4 blew up at 130k. Then there's a guy with the 'million mile van' that Rallypanam speaks of, who got way more than a million practically neglecting his. He was a hot-shot courier and couldn't or didn't always change his oil regularly, etc.

Good luck! That's what it takes.

Re: How long do the V10s and V8s last?

500,000 miles on either motor, in heavy commercial use (tow trucks, service trucks etc) is pretty common. I've seen many myself. One was an E350 5.4L that needed its 3rd alternator at 515,000 miles, and the owner that said was the only non-maintenance repair its had.

I'm at almost 385,000 HARD miles on mine. About 200,000 of that is towing miles, typical combined weight is about 22,000 pounds but sometimes closer to 25,000 pounds. It spends long stretches above 5,000 RPM when I'm fully loaded, and sometimes is idled for long periods to run the inverter. It's a lot quieter than the cheap-o generators I've had so far.

Engine and trans have not been touched other than the radiator, heater hose, starter relay (3 of them) and I swapped in a larger transmission cooler after installing the BuckStop.

I do run full synthetic oil, but go as long as 12,000 miles between changes. I target for 7500 but that doesn't usually happen. I change the transmission fluid (all of it) every 100,000 miles by pointing the cooler hose into a bucket.

I did preemptively changed my coils and injectors at the last tuneup simply because of milage. The injectors were probably not necessary, but they're easy to do when you have the coils out. The coils def have a higher failure rate after 10 yrs, so that's why I did those.

Re: How long do the V10s and V8s last?

I looked at the Ford Truck Enthusiasts website forum, a thread named High Mileage V10's. Plenty on there around the 300k mark. And higher.

There's so many out there now, replacements will be cheapish....

Yup. $1200 bucks will get you a complete used V10 in good condition. Probably half that for a long block with unknown history. That's why I keep driving mine. That would be about 2 payments on a new van, or an injection pump in Cummins 5.9L diesel, or half the injectors in a 6.0PSD.
