Insight into new vs used prices

It appears to me that the prices of late model, low mileage Sportsmobiles are not a lot lower than buying new. Do they hold their value that well or am I not adding up all the costs of ordering new?

if you can buy new then no worries about how the prior owners took care of things.
It seems to me that the newer the SMB is the better quality materials were used and has
all the upgrades. I have only bought used due to finances and not knowing how much I would end up using the Van.

Re: Insight into new vs used prices

There's likely some element of wishful thinking on the existing owners, and then there's supply (of which there isn't a lot of) vs demand. There's also some advantages to buying used.

Buying used, there's no waiting for your rig to enter the build process, let alone the length of the build process, so there's value in that.

Somewhat less taxes and registration fees.

Even if you only save $10K off new, that buys about 2500 gallons of fuel at California prices. None of this really matters if the configuration doesn't meet your needs though.

Don't forget, just because they are asking for a price doesn't mean they get it! You never know what they settled for.

Re: Insight into new vs used prices

It's nice to be on the cutting edge of what SMB offers which is a huge advantage. But just because it's new doesn't mean you won't have any problems either. When buying new it is a good idea to keep with the time tested options offered so you don't become a beta tester. On the other end of the spectrum buying used might mean picking up the original owners wore out problems. Everything wears out but can be rebuilt. There are members who have done amazing jobs rebuilding vans doing it themselves. There are also other companies who can build out a well built custom van interior for a reasonable cost.

Re: Insight into new vs used prices

I wrangled over that subject a lot and ended up buying new. For me, it was more a matter of financing and how much cash I had or didn't have. It is sometimes easier to borrow some or all if it is new and sometimes you get a better rate. I think it also depends how handy you are yourself (which a lot of folks are), how patient you are with fixing or upgrading, how much time you have and/or if you are just ready to hit the backroads immediately upon buying. If you buy new, you do get to pick more precisely what you want, but you sure do pay for it!
