LCD projector instead of tv in SMB

I'm considering the merits of having an LCD projector installed in place of a tv monitor in a SMB. Idea being, while driving the kids can watch a movie on iPad or projected on a solid screen (ie won't be shacking or waving during drive) and when in camp, can turn the projector outside on back of barn or what have you, and have our own drive in theater! What do you think, crazy, foolish or brilliant?

Anyone try this, thought about and changed their minds?

Tim

Re: LCD projector instead of tv in SMB

We used to carry a tabletop projector and rollup screen to camp, never used in the vehicle though. We would hang it on a tree and put the projector on a camp table with a laptop and speakers. Several families we camped with would all drag their chairs over and usually lots of other folks from the campground would catch on too. We had some big crowds. It was great, but too much for me to carry anymore.

Not sure you can get a 12v projector that will put out a large bright image. Are you thinking of running it off 120v while driving?

Re: LCD projector instead of tv in SMB

The pocket projector technology is really starting to produce decent results. I thought of picking one up for "movie" nights during our trip. Expensive though. Some of our state parks have an area that is used for Ranger talks/presentations that have a projector podium, permanent screen (or projection area) and benches. Every time I see one I think it'd be cool to organize a Rocky Horror showing or something.

I hadn't concidered the brightness factor while driving during the day. I think that about kills this idea as a replacement for tv in van but still cool for camping accessory.

I'm sure all the other campground users would enjoy it too. They might even pay to watch!

You can get a pico projector with a roku usb stick for under $200. It has enough battery life to watch a long movie.

No projector that will fit in the van can give you a decent daytime solution.
